The Trinamool Congress also believes that in 18 months it will “dominate” Indian politics. This would require edging out all others including the adroit Samajwadi Party chief, Mr Mulayam Singh Yadav, unless its idea of domination is an entirely different construction from the simple one.

Congress Looks For Main Opposition Status In Bengal Assembly

The breakdown of the alliance between the Trinamul Congress and the Congress has set the stage for a new dimension in Bengal politics as the Congress is keen to stake claim as the principal Opposition party and replace the CPI(M) in the state Assembly. Their target of attack will be chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s party in power now. Till date, the CPI(M) has enjoyed the crucial status of the principal Opposition party with its 39 MLAs.

The list includes CPI(M) politburo member Surjyakanta Mishra who has been the Leader of the Opposition while the Left Front at 61 as a combined strength. After the Congress’ exit with 42 MLAs from the Mamata Banerjee government on Saturday, the political theatre has changed drastically.

Congress ministers shift to Opposition benches in West Bengal

The West Bengal Assembly on Monday sported a new look with the Congress members, including the former ministers, shifting to the Opposition benches from the Treasury which they occupied till they withdrew support to the government last Saturday.

Of the six Congress ministers who resigned from the government along with the party's withdrawal of support in response to the TMC's pull out from the central government a day before, some were found seated in the Opposition benches, while the others were absent.

Alliance Turns Opposition In West Bengal



After withdrawing support from West Bengal’s government, with which it shared power for 16 months, the state Congress is now pushing for the position of the leader of the opposition in the state assembly.

Cong walks out, Mamata loses voice in West Bengal assembly

Twenty-four hours after six Trinamool ministers marched into the Prime Minister's office in New Delhi and put in their papers signalling the end of the alliance, a similar scene was enacted in Kolkata on Saturday. In the afternoon, six Congress ministers walked into chief minister Mamata Banerjee's office in Writers' and submitted their resignations.

Later, the group met the Governor, withdrawing support to the Trinamool government.
